At Cogent, we’re pleased to be included as a Sample Vendor in the latest Gartner® report: “Gartner’s Top Strategic Technology Trends for 2027: Autonomous Exposure Remediation.” Recognition is always welcome, but we’re most excited about how the Autonomous Exposure Remediation (AER) space is evolving. As AI has reshaped how software is built, it has led to an explosion of both the volume of vulnerabilities and how quickly any exposure is exploited. Beyond this, there has been a fundamental shift in what is exploited. Agent swarms are following attack paths no human team ever would, and this highlights why AER is getting the attention it is.

Gartner defines AER as “AI techniques to support semi- or fully autonomous identification of vulnerabilities in code, software supply chain components, third-party software and exposures in infrastructure. AER is a technology or an integrated multiagent system. It suggests and deploys fixes automatically, then integrates within solution delivery architectures to automate testing and remediation deployment, update vulnerable elements and roll back if necessary.” (Gartner’s Top Strategic Technology Trends for 2027: Autonomous Exposure Remediation, AI and Cybersecurity Insights Team, October 16, 2026)

The key focus here is on shrinking the time from “find” to “fix” across the vulnerabilities that represent real risk to an enterprise. At Cogent, we approach this with a multiagent system purpose-built to reduce friction and leverage automation for the end-to-end vulnerability and exposure management lifecycle, from discovery to assessment to remediation to reporting.

The major shift here is from focusing on scanning and compiling big lists of vulnerabilities to autonomously assessing and closing your exposure, whether that’s in the form of a brand new zero day or a multi-hop attack chain to your crown jewels. Not every vulnerability represents an actual risk to your specific business and environment (in fact, the majority often don’t), but the ones that do are now being exploited significantly faster than ever before. So with more noise and shorter windows to close what matters, autonomous exposure remediation is a necessary strategy for enterprises.

The trick is around what you actually fix autonomously. At Cogent, we believe that carving out zones of autonomy where agents can handle assessing and remediating vulnerabilities autonomously within a defined, bounded scope is the right starting point for most enterprises. The zones can and will grow over time, but for everything else, significantly reducing the time spent on identifying and assessing vulnerabilities by having agents discover and leverage true environmental and business context to prioritize what matters most to your business and deliver one-click remediation actions will cover the remainder as enterprises and capabilities mature.

We’ve long believed it’s time for businesses to start strategizing how they will transform vulnerability and exposure management for the AI era. We’re glad to see Gartner reflect this belief by naming AER as a top technology trend for 2027.
